Walking through the doors of Blackburne House Nursery for the first time can feel like stepping into a whole new world, as your child starts a new phase in their life. For both children and parents, starting nursery is an exciting and sometimes overwhelming milestone. What does a typical day look like? How do children spend their time, and what activities help them grow and learn?
We’re here to take you on a journey through a day in the life at Blackburne House Nursery, from the warm morning welcome to the end-of-day goodbyes. Whether your little one is just starting or you're curious about how a structured, fun-filled day unfolds, this glimpse into daily nursery life will give you peace of mind and insight into how we foster growth and joy in every moment.
Our children's day starts at the doors of our cosy Nursery, where they are greeted by a member of our wonderful Nursery staff. For many parents, dropping off children for the first time at nursery can be nerve-wracking, but our staff will put you at ease from the moment you drop your child off. Don't take our word for it: our parents rave about the experience they and their families have at Blackburne House Nursery!
"We have always felt so confident dropping them off knowing that their needs were being met in a really loving environment. Because of this, both children forged really strong bonds with the staff."
At Blackburne House Nursery, we know that breakfast is the most important meal of the day, so we start each day with a yummy breakfast to get us going. Toast, cereal, fresh fruit or yoghurt help our children to stay full and focused so they can make the most of the day!
The first activity of the day is always varied and designed to aid our children's development. The children have a choice of stations so that they can choose how they want to play, with our staff on hand to guide them. Some children choose messy play, a type of play that allows children to explore materials and their properties through their senses. This activity is great for children's sensory development. Children may also choose to take part in arts and crafts activities or draw pictures, unleashing their creative sides. Our older children who are
preparing for school spend the morning building a variety of skills, from reading and writing to Spanish lessons and PE. We have an outside session every morning (weather permitting) in our lovely Nursery garden where the children can play on the playground and develop their fitness and agility. All of the activities our children take part in are designed to enrich their childhoods and take steps to preparing them for school, and as a parent you can expect regular updates through our Famly app, so you can keep up with how your child is progressing day to day.
Lunch at Blackburne House Nursery is always fresh and healthy, and is prepared on site each day by our dedicated Nursery cook. We have a meat free policy to ensure that our menu is inclusive for our diverse group of children.
After lunch, our children enjoy some quiet time, with the babies having a well-earned nap and the older children taking part in imaginative activities like story time or puppet play. These activities are crucial for child development; reading and hearing stories helps children to expand their vocabulary and build their literacy skills before they start school. Our children foster a love of reading during their time at Blackburne House Nursery.
When quiet time is over, our children go back to playing - we offer them a range of child-led activities to boost their independence and imaginations. When asked about favourite playtime activities in Nursery, one of our children, Dusty, said 'I like to play babies and dress up!' The children all enjoy playing together with the variety of toys and books available to them at Blackburne House Nursery. We have an afternoon snack and play some more - and then, of course, is the all-important tidy up time, where we get the Nursery ready for another day of fun and learning tomorrow!
