A share of £1 million a year on offer for North West social entrepreneurs


A recruitment drive begins this week to unearth the North West’s most promising social entrepreneurs – with a share of £1m a year to help them change thousands of people’s lives. The Lloyds Banking Group Social Entrepreneurs Programme has been made possible thanks to a major funding commitment from Lloyds Banking Group and additional investment from Nominet Trust.

Successful applicants will receive a place on theUK’s leading specialist learning programme plus awards of £4,000 and £15,000, to help them start up and scale their business ideas for maximum success and social impact. One participant who is scaling their organisation will be selected from winners  around theUKto receive an awards package of £25,000.

 The programme will be open to Social Entrepreneurs from across theNorth West.

 Sylvia Pearson, School for Social Entrepreneurs North West Development Manager said: “To tackle the huge social and environmental challenges that we face today in Liverpool and across the North West, we need to recruit inspirational people with entrepreneurial flair from our communities – and give them the best tools to succeed.

 “We are calling for social entrepreneurs to step forward and take advantage of this fantastic programme. It is through initiatives such as this, and the work already being carried out across the North West, we will unleash the potential for people powered change, that bring business skills and social aims together to lift the fortunes of thousands of people.”

 The launch of this new programme is timely, given the latest figures from the Office of National Statistics which showed The North West saw the biggest rise in unemployment across any region in the UK. The North West School, which has been open since 2007, has already helped hundreds of individuals create social enterprises and employment opportunities. The total value of jobs created by School for Social Entrepreneurs Fellows is estimated to be £13m per year**.

 Jacquie Johnston-Lynch, who founded The Brink, a non-alcoholic bar in Liverpool that helps people recovering from addiction, said: “The business skills I learned through SSE North West, as well as the continued support from them and the network of people I have met thanks to their programmes have been instrumental in making The Brink the success it is today. There is so much potential in Liverpool to make it the national centre for social enterprise, and an initiative such as The Lloyds Banking Group Social Entrepreneurs Programme will only reap positive and lasting social, economical and environmental benefits.”

 Programme details:

 The Lloyds Banking Group Social Entrepreneurs Programme opens for applications on 26 April. Applications will close on 25 May and delivery will begin in October 2012.

 The programme will support 150 social entrepreneurs* each year, for five years, across eight regions: Northwest,London, Yorkshire and Humber,Bristol, East of England,Cornwall, Hampshire andScotland.

 Comprehensive support will be given by the SSE through its innovative ‘action learning’ programmes, plus grants of £4,000 and £15,000 and an annual £25,000 award:

 –     130 ‘Start Up’ awards: grants of £4,000, a place on a Start Up SSE learning programme delivered in eight UK locations and access to networks and continued alumni support following their completion of the programme;

 –     20 ‘Scale Up’ awards: grants of £15,000 and a place on a Scale Up SSE learning programme delivered at SSE headquarters in London, plus access to networks and continued alumni support following their completion of the programme; and

 –     1 ‘Lloyds Banking Group Social Entrepreneur of the Year’ award, given to a Scale Up applicant who demonstrates outstanding potential, who will receive a total package of £25K to scale their organisation
