The Nursery: Facilities

Blackburne House nursery is divided into 3 age appropriate rooms.

The Baby Room

This room accommodates six children between the ages of 6 weeks and 2 years. There are two members of staff in the room at all times, with a childcare student often present in addition. Staff encourage babies to develop at their own pace. They provide a stimulating environment and spend a great deal of time playing, talking and singing with them.

The Green Room
This room accommodates up to sixteen children between the ages of 2 and 3 years. There is a minimum of three staff in this room, plus childcare students. Children are provided with access to a wide variety of activities and play opportunities to encourage their personal growth and development. At this age, learning to play together, share, take turns and co-operate, is very important.

The Blue Room
This room accommodates children aged from 3 to 4 years, with one member of staff. In this room activities are more structured and learning outcomes more defined. Staff begin keeping assessment records, which are given to parents/carers to pass on to their child's teacher when he/she starts school.

Additional facilities include:

The Health Place
Here the children participate in music and movement sessions, dance sessions and ring games.

Outdoor Play Area

The outdoor play area is equipped with climbing frames, tents, tunnels, tricycles, scooters and a variety of wheeled toys to encourage physical development. We also use balls, hoops, quoits, etc, to encourage hand-to-eye co-ordination and co-operative play.

Library
Children visit the library on a weekly basis for story sessions. The library also operates a twice weekly babies' and toddlers' lending service when children may choose from a wide selection of books to share with their parents/carers at home.

Information Technology
There are computers in the nursery, both in the Green Room and in the Blue Room. Children have access to educational software, which is age-appropriate.

Outings
During the summer months we aim to take the children on group outings to places of interest: e.g. Eureka!, The Children's Museum, Knowsley Safari Park, Gulliver's World, etc.
